How to Stop Hoarding !!

Are you hoarding?  First let me explain what is hoarding. Hoarding is a behavior that is persistent in being very difficult discarding or parting ways with possession. Hoarders may think they need to save everything. If you are having problems discarding things or getting rid of items, you may be label as having a hoarding disorder. You may experience distress at the thought of getting rid of the items and probably feeling depress at times.

Some people think that people who are characterized as a hoarder they are just lazy or stubborn and disoriented. Hoarders are known to be attached to their possessions. However, it is deeper than that, some hoarders are mentally ill about departed from their possessions.

How to determine a Hoarder behavior:

How to determine if you are a hoarder or not, you probably not a hoarder. You probably just need some help on how to declutter areas in your house. Well the truth of the matters is rather you a hoarder or not, there are signs. And, some of these signs show with your behavior. Having an obsessive compulsion behavior clearly shows you need help. Some of the unusual behaviors are harmful effects, physical, emotional, financial, social, the person who may be suffering from hoarding disorder along with family members it can cause causality if it not taking care of in the early stages.

Hoarders usual have an increase of quantity of their collected items compared to individuals with normal collecting behaviors. They accumulate numbers of possessions that often fill up or clutter in their living areas of their home or workplace. Sometimes they don’t even intend to use these items anymore.

Individuals, that have hoarders’ symptoms of disorder cause significant distress or impairment in social gatherings, workplace, or other important areas of functioning including maintaining an environment for self and /or others. Individuals that are hoarders may think they are normal by clutter up their spaces around them. For example, I work as a Home Health Aide, and I saw hoarding at first hand taking care of one my clients. My client would stop me from moving clothes off her chair. She did not want me to clean up her house. However, it can be distressing to other people, such as family members or landlords.

Check out this video I found on YouTube( I did not own the rights to this video), ABC News special report (Children of Hoarders)(August 6, 2011):   https://youtu.be/TSaxn0a1Cbk

It is possible you may not be a hoarder, but you may have some hoarding tendencies. These are tips to help people with hoarding tendencies.

Make sure you not throwing away anything:

First you, need to slow down, do not go through your home and throw everything into the garage at once. This may cause strong feelings of regret and anxiety; rather go through sections by sections in the house or collection each week. Gradually work your way into areas in the house to find the things you want to get rid of.

Minimize the collections:
If you have a collection of all your birthday cards, choose to save one or two or the very best card and toss the rest. A great tip: try framing or displaying one item from a collection so it stands out, or donate, and recycle the rest.

Put the items in a box:
If you cannot decide to get rid of it or keep an item, put it in a box for six months. If you did not open the box before then, then you know it’s time to let it go without regret.  This is a good idea for those people who hoard item like newspaper, magazines, clippings, etc.

Get rid of unused items:
If you know for sure you have not used an item or open an item for months and it just sitting around in your home not being used, then you already know what to do about that. Donated, sell it, or give it away to someone that will used it wisely. For example: If you have an book on mastering art of Italian Cooking but you never open the book or tried any of the recipes, doesn’t mean you are a cook.

A great tip resists the urge to buy items of a new hobby until you are actively participating in that hobby. I believe to prevent becoming a hoarder, start to declutter your area and space often. Once you start to get ride of the items you never use, it will be easier to keep clutter from creeping up on you.
